Mrs. Jennifer Brooks

About Me: Welcome incoming 6th and 7th grade students and parents. I’m excited for the beginning of the new year. This is my third year teaching at Baseline Middle School, but my sixth year teaching. I graduated Western Michigan University in 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts in Education with a major in social studies and a minor in history. In October I will also be graduating with a Masters of Education in Secondary Litearcy. Although my heart is in teaching social studies, I recognize the importance for developing a classroom rich with literacy.

I am attracted to teaching social studies because of my love for travel, understanding how things came to be, and recognizing the cause of effect of different events. I love teaching social studies, not because I want the kids to memorize dates, but because I strongly believe social studies assists in the development of citizenship, spatial awareness, tolerance, social skills, problem solving, and many other life skills. Along with my passion for social studies I love reading to better understand the world around me.

I like to be involved in many things-probably too many. My favorite sports include hockey and football. “Go Red Wings!” I love to camp and hike. I’ve taken up golf as my new challenge this past summer and hope to continue. Among my many activities; traveling is my favorite hobby. In the summer of 2009 I am very thankful for the opportunity I’ve had to travel through Western Europe. In doing so, I visited many ancient civilization ruins. I’ve snorkeled the Belize Barrier Reef, climbed the Eiffel Tower, ventured through the Parthenon on top of the Athenian Acropolis, whitewater rafted through the Alps, walked the beaches in Barcelona, tasted the pizza’s of Italy, saw the ruins of Pompeii, and toured Anne Frank’s hideaway. My future travel plans includes visiting Central America. I have a goal to visit 6 out of the 7 continents. Antarctica doesn’t look as appealing.

I look forward to a great year. If you have any questions feel free to email or call me.
