Summer 2026 Learning Program Update
This year SHPS will be making a change to our summer learning program. Instead of offering a traditional K–8 summer school model, the district will transition to providing individual and small-group tutoring sessions for students.
Several factors informed this decision. In recent years, participation in our traditional summer program has been limited, and available data indicates that the format has resulted in minimal measurable academic gains. As we continuously evaluate our programs, we aim to ensure that the time, resources, and effort invested produce the greatest possible impact on student learning.
Current educational research strongly supports the effectiveness of high-impact tutoring as one of the most successful strategies for accelerating student learning. High-impact tutoring provides students with targeted, personalized instruction in very small groups or one-on-one settings, allowing educators to focus on specific learning needs. By shifting to this model, we hope to provide a more focused and effective summer learning opportunity that better supports student growth for students performing below grade level in reading and/or math. If your student qualifies for summer tutoring, they will receive an invitation to participate and more details in mid-May.
The high school will continue to offer credit recovery courses for high school students.
The SHPS “Book Bus” will operate as it has in summers past, offering a K-8 reading program that includes free books for participating students.
Sports camps, swim lessons, and opportunities provided by our community partners will be offered. There is also a community recreation supported summer day camp program being held at Maple Grove Elementary.
We appreciate your flexibility and understanding as we navigate these changes! Please contact your student’s school if you have any questions.
